Most Valuable to Becoming a Better Writer

It has been a great semester learning how to write.  Being able to gather information to make your online voice clear and to the point.  The more knowledge you are about a subject the better you will have at writing on the subject.  You will have more passion to get your voice out.  Convincing people that your voice needs to be heard.

I like how Zinsser breaks down all angles in order to achieve to become a better writer.  You can take a great deal of what he says and use it to help your site paint a clear picture for the reader.  Zinsser has some history in writing.  His mother was passionate about writing, but Zinsser wasn’t really destined to become a writer until he went to write for the New York Herald. Eventually, he wanted to write well.  He also wanted to entertain others. Zinsser says, “you have to be able to jump out of your piece.”  You have to be unique enough that it will keep people from turing away.  You want to hold that audience.

Overall, I hope that I have been able to inform you about the practice of Bikram Yoga.  I have had fun with my pseudo-name of Yogi Master.  I’am going to hate to see Yogi Master die.  I wanted to make sure the online voice of Yogi Master was strong.   I hope that I was able to share with the class some positive insight that can help their life.

Multimedia Script - A Bikram Yoga Story

FADE UP FROM BLACK

LONG SHOT OF COUNTRY FARM

The story is set on a summer day out in the country.

MATILDA: Hello Dave, how are you?

DAVE: I’m doing well. What have you been up to Matilda?

MATILDA: I’ve been busy taking care of the yard.

DAVE: Oh, I’ve noticed when I drive by your yard looks really nice.  How’s the rest of the family?

MATILA: They are doing fine.  My brother just got a new job selling cars.  My mother has been busy crocheting a blanket.  She is trying to get it done for my nieces birthday.

DAVE: Wow, your brother, Carlos, is selling cars.  I never thought he would be into selling cars and talking to people throughout the day.  Is he going out and getting drunk every night. Does he get depressed still?

MATILDA: Oh yes, Carlos, is going out with his homeboys.  He is always flirting with the ladies and all of his friends have to keep him from getting into fights because he gets wasted and he picks fights with other people.  Carlos, lives alone, so he does get depressed and he probably feels lonely.

DAVE: Really, that doesn’t sound to good at all.  I have something I’d like him to try if he’s willing.  It will change his life.

MATILDA: Oh boy, Dave, that would be so great.  What do you have in mind?

DAVE: A little something called Bikram Yoga.

MATILDA: Yoga, that would be good.  I’ve never heard of Bikram Yoga.  What kind of yoga is that?

DAVE:  Bikram Yoga is hot yoga or hatha yoga.  The room you do your practice in is hot up to one-hundred and five degrees.  You sweat quite a bit during each posture.  The sweating is good because it cleans out your pours. Sweating cleanses your body.

MATIDA: Sound very interesting, Dave, I’ll have to get in touch with, Carlos, to see if he’d be interested.

MATIDA: Hello Carlos, (calling on phone)

CARLOS: Hello, is this you Matilda?

MATILDA, Yes, Carlos, It’s me.  how are you doing, Carlos?

CARLOS: I’m doing fine.  I went out last night and I met this girl.  I got her number, but I lost my cell phone.  So, I won’t be able to call her.

MATILDA: That’s too bad.  We’re you out drinking with your buddies again?

CARLOS: Yeah, I sure was.

MATILDA: I wish you’d stop drinking so much, I really care about you.

CARLOS: I know, but it’s hard because I like to go out and socialize.

MATILDA: Socializing is good, however you need to be more careful when it comes to drinking.

CARLOS: I understand, Matilda, would you get off my back about my drinking.

MATILDA: No, I’m not going to get off your back.  I have something I’d like you to try.  It’s called Bikram Yoga.  Dave introduced it to me.  He wanted me to see if you’d be interested in doing it.  I think it would help you have a better lifestyle.

CARLOS:  Why are you always wanting me to things I’m not really interested in?

MATILDA: Because I care for your overall health and well being because I’m your sister.

CARLOS: OK, can you please let, Dave, know I’ll give it a try.

MATILDA: Just give it a try, I’m hoping you’ll like it.

(walks over to Dave’s house)

MATILA: Hello Dave, how are things?

DAVE: Things are going well for me.

MATILDA: I spoke to, Carlos and he said he would be interested in joining you for a class.

DAVE: That sounds great!

MATILDA: I will see if he can make it to this Friday’s class.

DAVE: Ok, that should work.

(Matilda walks back home and calls Carlos)

MATILDA: Hello Carlos

CARLOS: Yeah, Matilda, it’s me.

MATILDA: Would, this Friday work for you to try yoga with Dave.

CARLOS: Yes, that should be fine.  Should I meet him on Friday at the yoga studio.

MATILDA: Yes

(Dave and Carlos meet outside of the yoga studio)

DAVE: Hey Carlos, how are you doing?

CARLOS: Not bad, what are you dragging me into.

DAVE: I’m going to show you something that can change your life.

CARLOS: I’ve never heard of something so powerful it can change your life.

DAVE: Well, today is your day my friend.

(Dave and Carlos are in studio just before class starts)

CARLOS: It’s really hot in here, Dave.  I don’t know if I can take it.

DAVE: Sure you can just follow my lead.

(Dave and Carlos are doing the postures)

CARLOS: (thinking) man Dave looks like a pretzel. I can’t believe how he is able to bend so much.

(class ends)

DAVE: How are you feeling, Carlos?

CARLOS:  Actually, I don’t feel bad at all.  I really feel exhausted.

DAVE: That’s good.  Exhausted is good because you made your body work.  I’m glad you joined me today, Carlos.  That shows a great deal of courage on your part.  You should be proud of yourself.

CARLOS: Thanks, Dave I’m glad I had the time off to come and try it.

DAVE: You need to come on a more regular basis.  Then you will see more of a life changing result.  It takes time to learn the postures.

CARLOS: I understand, Dave.  I would be interested in trying it again.

(Dave and Carlos walk off into the distance)

(camera long shot of both Dave and Carlos)

Social Media Campaign

The social media campaign I decided to critique is the Bikram Yoga page on Facebook.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bikram-Yoga-Farmington-CT/139141467307

On the Bikram Yoga Farmington Page on Facebook, there is a great deal of pictures and talk among all yogis.  This is great because you will feel as if you are part of this group.  It can be a good resource in finding if classes are cancelled.  When you read the newsfeed on Facebook you can get a sense of the culture.  All of the yogi’s create the culture.  Facebook is a great resource to use because everyone is using it.  This will take away from other blogging sites because you can go to one place and share your yoga thoughts.

If I wanted to start my own campaign for my own site.  I would use a combination of Twitter and YouTube.  I would have to use Facebook.  This day an age there wouldn’t be any reason not to use all resources available because it is only going to help yourself promote your site or your business better.

On YouTube I would show people various postures and tweet about them on Twitter.  Facebook would be more for the community of whatever type of yoga you wanted to discuss.  Obviously, you could discuss something on Twitter, but it would be more brief and straight to the point because of the letter count.

Bikram Yoga - Transcript

The first posture I would like to discuss is Camel Pose - Ustrasana.  It is posture #21 out  of 26. The benefits of this posture a compression of the spine and it stimulates the nervous system.  As you can see by looking at this picture the compression of the lower spine.  The setup of this posture, your knees are six inches apart, you are going to place your hands on your hips, pushing your chest out, slowly bend your head back, if you can grab your feet.  I can’t touch my feet.  It is a difficult posture.

The second posture, I’d like to discuss is Bow Pose - Dhanurasana posture 18.  The benefits of this posture it will increase circulation and strengthens spine and aids in digestion.  This posture you are lying on your stomach, your knees are together, you are going to grab the outside of your feet.  Just before getting into the posture you are going  to take a deep breath.  While you  are in the posture you will use 80/20 breathing.  Where you will hold 80 percent of air in your lungs and only let out 20 percent.  In this picture you can see she is able to get her feet up pretty high.  You need to kick your feet back once you kick your feet back so far you are going to roll your body forward like a wheel.  When you roll forward you will be balancing on your torso.

The third posture is triangle posture or Trikanasna.  The benefits of this posture is that it improves every area of the body.  This is the toughest posture in the entire series.  To get into this posture you are going to stand to the left of your mat and towel.  Both of your arms go up over your head, interlocking your hand, leaving your index fingers pointing to the ceiling.  Take a big step over you mat and towel.  Both arms will come down parallel to the floor. You will need to turn your right foot out, bend your right knee, try to get as low as you can, the lower the better.  Move both arms so your elbow is touching your knee, stretch towards the ceiling with your left arms and stretch your right arm towards the floor.  You are stretching in opposite directions.  Turn you head so your chin is touching left shoulder.  You do both left and right side of this posture.

A the final posture I’d like to discuss is Standing Head to Knee or Dandayamana Janusirasana.  When I do this posture I can only kick out I’am unable to touch my head to my knee.  That takes a great deal of time to learn.  This posture starts out standing with your feet together.  Lift your right foot up, round down interlock your hands and place them under your foot.  If you are just trying to keep the balance stay where you are.  If your left leg is solid like a lap post then kick your leg out.  If your leg is fully extended you can try to bend from your lower back and touch your head to your knee.

These are just a few of the postures in Bikram Yoga.  As a beginner you can take as much time as you need.  There isn’t any pressure if you are not able to do a posture.  Be patient and take your time.  If you have any questions be sure and contact me via Twitter.  All Yogi’s come check out my blogging site.  Leave your thoughts and comments.

Thank You

Executive Summary

Feeling better throughout the day is a goal everyone should have.

Your spine becomes more flexible when you strengthen the core of the body.  Your abdomen, buttocks, and thighs become stronger.  When you stretch your spine from left to right and back you are sending signals all over your body.  Signals are generated from the nervous system and sent all over the body.

The nervous system is connected to the spine as well as several types of muscles.  The spine is also connected to the brain.  When you make your spine stronger you are also making your mind stronger.  Everything is connected so one organ communicates to other organs.  Just like the muscles that are stretching they are connected to other muscles.  The spine is connected to other bones in the skeletal system, and so forth. Blood cells are circulating throughout your body.

You can think of the practice of yoga like mixing yourself up like a martini.

How can the practice of Bikram Yoga lead to having more positive energy?  Each person who practices Bikram Yoga will be flushing their blood of toxins.  The toxins arrive in the blood from blood cells that haven’t been as active.  Bending your body in different directions will cleanse and regenerate blood cells.  The less toxins you carry in your blood the more likely you will have a positive outlook on life.

Everyday each human being consumes a number of toxins.  For example; the air we breathe, foods we eat, what we choose to drink, if we smoke etc. These example can have an effect on our daily life. We might be more tired throughout the day.  It can cause mood swings.  We can become more stressed out.

By practicing yoga you are changing the shape of your brain.  I have seen a CAT scan of people’s brain when they are depressed and it will show places where there are holes or dead spaces.  The dead areas are due to a lack of oxygen and blood supply to those areas. Your brain isn’t being used to it’s fullest ability.  People can take life for granite and not take care of their overall well being.

Triangle Pose - Trikanasana

The posture of Triangle Pose is one of the more difficult postures to do.

When you first begin to do this posture you are standing with both feet together looking into the mirror. You are standing to the left of your mat.

Put your arms over your head and interlock your fingers.
Keep your index fingers pointed towards the sky.
Take a big step over your mat and towel.
Your arms come down parrell to the floor.
Turn your right foot out. Bend your hips, the lower you can get the better. Your left can be placed in a 45 degree angle.
Move both arms, keep your torso stable and your spine straight. Reach down with your right arm and reach up with your left arm.
You are stretching in opposite directions.

Benefits Revitalizes your nerves, veins, and tissue. It tones your muscles within your torso area. It benefits the heart and the lungs by marring them both together.
